Sullivan University Provides
TB Testing for Mission Personnel
Until 1946, tuberculosis was a leading cause of death among the urban poor. During the 1800s, one in four deaths was attributed to tuberculosis. TB has been a scourge since antiquity; the presence of the tuberculosis bacteria has been discovered in Egyptian mummies. Thankfully, TB is treatable, but the threat remains. Homeless shelters are particularly vulnerable to the spreading of the tuberculosis bacteria. As a precautionary effort to halt an outbreak, shelters require TB testing among resident clients. Shelter employees are also vulnerable to the disease; thankfully, Sullivan University’s College of Pharmacy has been providing Wayside Christian Mission staff persons with free and convenient onsite TB testing. Recently, Assistant Professor Sarah Raake, Pharm. D. and two pharmaceutical students conducted TB testing at the mission’s Hotel Louisville. This valuable service made it easy for mission staff personal to comply with local shelter licensing requirements concerning annual TB testing. We are indeed grateful to Sarah Raake and our many friends at Sullivan University.
